A fallen angel is a bond downgraded from investment grade to high yield. A rising star moves the other way.
Why the line matters
Many insurers, pension funds and index-tracking funds are restricted to investment-grade bonds. When a large issuer is downgraded below BBB-/Baa3, these investors may have to sell, often at depressed prices, while high-yield investors must absorb the new supply.
Price behaviour
Studies of past episodes have found that fallen-angel bonds often underperform around the downgrade and sometimes recover afterwards, as forced selling ends. Rising stars tend to tighten as the market anticipates the upgrade. These patterns are not guaranteed and depend heavily on the issuer.
